Tight ensembles, dynamic soloists and propulsive rhythm sections were the hallmarks of hard bop, the exhilarating idiom that reached its pinnacle on the seminal albums of bandleaders like Art Blakey, Woody Shaw and Horace Silver. Its a style that continues to motivate players and audiences alike, among them Phil Ware (piano), who’s again convened leading Irish musicians in bop homage, including Ray Martin (trumpet), Robert Geraghty (sax), Damian Evans (bass) & Dominic Mullan (drums).

Phil Ware Trio
Phil Ware - piano
Dave Redmond - double bass
Kevin Brady - drums
"An impressive demonstration of the straight-ahead bop piano lineage." The Irish Times
As jazz settles into its second century, the rude health of the piano trio worldwide belies the notion that the creative seam of acoustic piano, bass and drums has been mined to exhaustion, and Ireland has its own high achievers.
Described by The Irish Times as a textbook example of the ongoing vitality of the tradition, Phil Ware's trio has set a new benchmark for the piano trio here. Born in England but a Dubliner since 2000, Ware's contribution to the Irish jazz resurgence has been generous to a fault, his tasteful and always supportive playing a leitmotif of many leading groups.
As with so many pianists, he has a special affinity for singers, but his penchant for melody is best appreciated when he performs with stalwarts bassist Dave Redmond and drummer Kevin Brady and their hallmark deep groove.
Like the great piano trios that have preceded them, this is a genuinely democratic discourse between the three participating musicians, with each of the musical elements in a delicately poised balance between collective responsibility and individual expression. First among these equals is Ware, swinging hard with the instrument's full potential, from its gentle intimacy to its orchestral sweep, captured beneath his hands.
Stride for stride, a piano trio from Ireland worthy of the genre's illustrious history.

3G
Featuring Chris Guilfoyle on Guitar, Ronan Guilfoyle on Bass and Conor Guilfoyle on Drums.
What band consists of two brothers, a father and son, and an uncle and nephew yet is only a trio? The answer to this future question on a jazz trivia quiz is 3G, A trio consisting of brothers Ronan and Conor Guilfoyle, and Ronan’s son Chris Guilfoyle. Ronan and Conor have been pillars of the Irish jazz scene for more than 20 years, have been hugely influential with their work on rhythm both nationally and internationally, and have performed and taught all over the world. Chris is very much following in the family business, graduating with a BA in Jazz Performance from Newpark Music Centre, leads and composes for his own band ‘Umbra’, and has already performed with such international luminaries as George Kontrafouris, Ralph Peterson and Dave Liebman.
With such a background and given the history of the brothers Guilfoyle, you might expect 3G to be concerned a lot with rhythm and you wouldn’t be wrong! The trio espouses a virtuoso approach to both playing in general and rhythm in particular, and their music is muscular, forthright and swinging. With a repertoire comprising of original compositions and reinvestigations of classic jazz standards, 3G’s music both refers to the jazz tradition and revels in areas yet to be fully explored. The music is often rhythmically complex yet never loses sight of the traditional jazz virtues of swing and groove, interplay and interaction, exploration and surprise.
3G - three Guilfoyles, two generations, three individuals yet one collective identity and one musical mission – tearing it up!
